right. i've decided i need some more sound out of my car. not much more, but louder than stock.

i'm not going to look at a cat back system. i'm just keen on keeping the current tone of the car, just after it a little louder.. somewhere between what it is now, and what a c-pe exhaust delivers.

can anyone recommend one of these things:

a) a good brand of muffler that will do this..
B) somewhere in melbourne that is trustworthy and knows mufflers..

umm, your better off getting a cat back system.

Then you can turn the car back stock if you have to.

all the catback systems i have heard are way too loud for what i'm after...

just wanting something slightly louder than stock... so.. if stock is say 1 / 5, and a c-pe / turboxs catback is 5/5 i'm looking for a 2.5 - 3 /5... (if that makes any sense???)

Go to an exhaust place, or ring around, and ask if there's someone who can fit a different muffler to the rear end, slightly larger or different shape piping so that you get a change in volume, but without the whole system being changed.

It is easier to do a whole bolt-on zorst, but yeah, it does change things lots.

Ive got a down pipe and high flow cat, with the stock catback. Its still stock sounding, but a little throatier.....may not be enough to keep you happy soundwise.

My car had an after market muffler and the exhaust changed back about as far as the rear axle when I bought it. It was just barely louder than stock. I'm not sure what muffler it was though unfortunately.

I changed it pretty much straight away to a cat back Turbo XS system which I'll finish to turbo back when I do the front mount. The full system sounds far better imo but probably a little loud for your liking. Otherwise you can do the downpipe/cat and you'll get a similar noise to just the rear muffler.

Apparently the GHL SS exhaust is good. Haven't heard it though.
I've heard the Borla, it's a nice rumble & not that loud @ all actually, unless u redline the thing.

These American brands seem to go for the more civilized low rumble, rather than the full out scream/growl of the japanese exhausts like the HKS powergetter. Yes. That thing is TOO loud!

Also other Jap brands like Buddy club have mega loud exhausts, had one in my DC5R, gave me a headache even just cruising on the freeway @ abt 3.2RPM.

I'm lookin' @ getting a Borla myself.
I'm a bit over mega loud exhausts too man. It's uncomfortable, attention seeking, and rice =P

Up to you I suppose. I was also lookin' @ getting a muffler only for my exhaust system. But I've heard a few Mazda 3s w/ modified stock exhausts and the sound is not nice @ all.

Also, you'd be looking @ like $250-350 for a decent brand of muffler & fitting. Pretty much half way there to a Borla Cat-back, which not only sounds great, but offers pretty handsome power gains. Don't forget abt the power gain for each $ u spend.

Peace! Look forward to seein' wat u decide on, re.

Bear in mind muzby, the noise is very different inside the cabin.
It may sound 'loud-ish' from directly behind, looking straight into the exhaust. But really, how often are you going to do that?

Muzby, Krusty and I used 'Auto Xcess' in blackburn. The guy there (Roy) was excellent! His number is 9898 9500.
Tell him the guys with the Mazda 6 MPS's told you to go to him. He really does know his stuff and he did an excellent job on our cars.

While we're on the exhaust topic boys, wanted to ask you what you guys think of this comment:

"increasing the diameter of your dump pipe & exhaust could increase your boost to dangerous levels, seriously increasing the risk of blowing your turbo"

My Supra friend freaked out when I said I might b getting a cat back (already have a TurboXS downpipe) and insisted that I get a boost controller 1st do keep boost DOWN. He has a Twin Turbo Supra, & apparently all the Supra ppl are very very wary of this issue!

What about for MPSs? I can't picture boost jumping up that high in a MPS... or can it?

I don't mind gettin a boost controller 1st I suppose... w/ it being 2nd on my list anyway after my Borla Cat-back... but yeh, if I had my way, I'd have that American Spec rumble ASAP!

Peace! Tell me what y'all think!

you should be ok with the catback as you've pretty much removed all the restrictive parts from your exhaust system already. instead of a boost controller, get a boost guage now to monitor boost levels without the cat-back, then see where they go after the cat back - since you had planned on getting the controller anyway you could just hold off till you find the right controller + you'll have a peace of mind with a guage monitoring boost levels.

+ there are quite a few guys out there now with full exhaust systems + intake on there MPS's and there hasn't been any issues posted so its within the safe range for the ecu, along with a CEL if you spiked out of its range too often (id hope)

have you put in a high flow 2nd cat as well?
